Can CBD be used for arthritis pain? What are the risks and benefits of using CBD oil and what does science say about it?
What is CBD?
CBD is a type of cannabinoid, which is a chemical that occurs naturally in cannabis plants. Cannabis contains several different chemicals, one of which is CBD and the other is tetrahydrocannabinol or (THC). THC is the chemical that can change a person’s mental state or produce a high, CBD does not.
There are many different types of CBD oils on the market, and the amount of CBD in them may vary. Some may also contain small amounts of THC. When lawmakers passed the Farm Bill which legalized hemp plants, it states it must contain less than 0.3% THC. Believe it or not I actually found one that contains 0% THC, is broad spectrum, organic compliant, non GMO and is completely grown and made in the USA. You can find it here.
CBD Oil and Arthritis Pain Relief
Arthritis is a leading cause of work disability among US adults according to the CDC. It affects over 54 million Americans. The two most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).
There have been studies conducted on animals but very few on humans. Here is a list of some I found.
- This study found that CBD helped to reduce inflammatory pain in rats
- This one showed promising results supporting the therapeutic value of CBD in OA management
- This study suggest that CBD may be a safe, useful therapeutic for treating OA joint neuropathic pain.
Is CBD Right for Me?
The best way to answer this is to have you consult with your physician. They will be able to discuss possible side effects and drug interactions. They may even be able to help you with proper dosages.
Please note the FDA doesn’t currently approve CBD oil as a medical treatment for arthritis.
Is there a Takeaway?
Yes, I believe there is a takeaway. CBD oil shows promise as a treatment for arthritis pain. If what the researchers found is true it may reduce pain and inflammation.
However, it must be noted that more research needs to be done to find out for sure if CBD oil is an effective treatment for arthritis.
